Republicans win U.S. Senate majority

Republicans won a majority of seats in the U.S. Senate Tuesday night, after flipping seats in Ohio and West Virginia, and holding the line on incumbent seats in Texas and Nebraska.
Donald Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Bernie Moreno ousted incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio, while Gov. Jim Justice won the seat of outgoing Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin.
In an expected win, Utah Republican Rep. John Curtis defeated Democratic candidate Caroline Gleich to win former Sen. Mitt Romney’s seat in Utah.
In Texas, considered the “white whale for Democrats,” Democratic Rep. Colin Allred could not unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who won his reelection bid. Incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Scott also won against his Democratic challenger, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, in Florida.
Along with Manchin, independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona, is also not running for another term. The race to replace her in Arizona — between Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego and Republican Kari Lake — is closer.
Only a third of Senate seats are up for grabs every two years, and this year Democrats were defending 23 seats, while Republicans are only defending 11 seats.
Montana could also flip Tuesday, and races in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona were still too close to call as of 10 p.m. MT.
